Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Producer Explains the New Film's Place in the Manga Canon
Dragon Ball Super is now in theaters across Japan, and the producer of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero has answered questions about how the film fits into the manga canon! When Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was first announced, it was revealed that Akira Toriyama had begun work on the new film shortly before Dragon Ball Super: Broly. With the manga going far beyond the events of the anime, fans have begun to wonder where the project fits into the timeline of the film. The film's producer has now provided additional information.
Akio Iyoku, the film's producer, opened up about where the new film fits into the manga's canon in an interview for Shueisha's V-Jump magazine to celebrate the release of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and the latest chapter of the manga series (as detailed by @Cipher db on Twitter). To clarify the franchise's overall timeline, Iyoku explained that the anime film and manga are actually on a "parallel" set of stories, with the freedom to experiment for each release of the series.
"We currently have two lines of Dragon Ball Super running between this film and Toyotaro-manga," sensei's Iyoku explained. "To begin, the film is written solely as a follow-up to [Dragon Ball Super: Broly]. We wanted to pick up on and meet the expectations of everyone who has stuck with Dragon Ball thus far, such as, 'It'd be cool if this happened,' or 'I hope this kind of character shows up.'" Iyoku then went on to explain how it relates to the manga releases for the series.
"And [V- Jump's] pages continue the story of Goku and Vegeta. We'll see new strong enemies appear, as well as new stories and events unfold "Iyoku elaborated. "Of course, Toriyama meticulously supervises the manga storylines as well, so it's as if events are happening simultaneously. We try not to build things in too strictly in terms of timeline placement—we'd rather leave margins in the story to allow for a greater degree of freedom."
Then Iyoku demonstrates how both releases can experiment "For example, Broly was an anime-original character who was brought into the world of the main series by Toriyama's own hand, and it's precisely those kinds of margins being left in the fiction world that allowed for and experimentation in the first place. Simply put, 'things are more interesting this way!'"
What are your thoughts on Iyoku's explanation for the movie and manga timelines? Do you hope to see more crossover between the two in the future? Let us know what you think about it in the comments!
